Georgii Anatolyevian Zelma

A pioneer of modern documentary photography, Georgi Zelma was born in Tashkent, in 1906.
He began photographing with a 13 x 18 centimeter-sized-negative camera and later used the
Leica for his documentary work, which continually centered on modernization and the cultural
transformations of Central Asia during the twenties and thirties. Zelma also photographed
themes commissioned by Alexander Rodchenko and his wife, designer Varvara Stepanova,
for various publications. He also documented one of the turning points of the Second World
War at Stalingrad, which inspired the theme for the American film «Enemy at the Gate»,
in 2001.
